About Veterinary Medicines
What is the VMD?
VMD is short for Veterinary Medicines Directorate. The vision of the VMD is the responsible, safe and effective use of veterinary medicinal products. In working towards achieving this vision the VMD aims to protect public health, animal health, the environment and promote animal welfare by assuring the safety, quality and efficacy of veterinary medicines.

VMD Product Information Database
The VMD maintains a product information database, which details all veterinary medicinal products currently authorised in the UK together with a list of suspended and recently expired products. It also includes homeopathic products and Specified Feed Additives.

What do the Legal Categories mean?
POM-V: | This is a Prescription Only Medicine that is prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and supplied by a veterinary surgeon or pharmacist. |
POM-VPS: | This is a Prescription Only Medicine that is prescribed and supplied by a veterinary surgeon, pharmacist or a suitably qualified person (SQP). |
NFA-VPS: | This is a medication for a non-food animal that is supplied by a pharmacist or suitably qualified person (SQP). |
How to Report an Adverse Reaction
The VMD runs an Adverse Reaction Reporting Scheme. You can report a suspected adverse reaction to a veterinary medicine online or download a form to post at: https://www.vmd.defra.gov.uk/adversereactionreporting/
