Important pet supplies for a new cat’s health and happiness
Getting and bringing home a new kitten is an exciting experience, but before you bring your new cat home, it is important to make sure that you have purchased all of the essential cat supplies that it may need. Kittens may look cute and cuddly, but they also need a lot of love, care and attention to make sure that they grow up to be happy and healthy cats. Vetpharmacy has put together a quick checklist of essential items that your new cat may require.
Essential kitten supplies checklist
- Cat sanitary products - Litter boxes and tray come in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes, but make sure to choose a litter box that will be easy for your new cat to use and become accustomed to. As a result of this purchase, you will also need to buy cat litter, a litter scoop and some pet friendly disinfectant e.g. Johnsons Clean n Safe Disinfectant. There are a wide range of different cat litters available on the market; however it is best to choose a non clumping cat litter for use by a kitten.
- Cat bed - You will also need to create somewhere warm and safe for your kitten to sleep. This could simply be a sturdy box with a nice warm, cosy blanket inside or a bed that was made specifically with cats in mind. This needs to be positioned somewhere within your home that the kitten will be both warm and safe from hazards.
- Food and water bowls - Food and water bowls will also be needed, so that you kitten has somewhere to eat and drink.
- Kitten food - It is important to buy a cat food that will be suitable for a kitten’s nutritional needs, as growing cats have different needs to fully grown cats. A specially tailored food, such as Burns Kitten Food, should provide your kitten with all nutrients that it needs to grow into a healthy cat.
- Cat Toys - It is also useful to purchase a scratching post for your new pet, so that it will hopefully use this instead of scratching at your furniture. A range of suitable cat toys would also be a good idea to purchase, in order to keep your cat active and so that it has something to interact with.
- Cat carrier - A cat carrier is also useful, for those dreaded trips to the vet.
- Cat wormer - Spot on cat wormers, such as Bob Martin Spot On Dewormer for Cats and Kittens, are suitable for weaned kittens and remove the hassles of trying to get your new cat to swallow tablets or paste, as the product is simply applied to the back of the neck.
- Flea treatment - It is important to make sure that you choose a flea treatment which is suitable for use on kittens, such as Johnsons 4fleas Spot on Protector Cat & Kitten (3 Month). It is always advisable to check the manufacturer’s instructions on cat wormers and flea treatments to make sure the product is suitable for your cat before using.
It is important to make sure that your home is safe and secure and that you have all the kitten supplies that you need before you bring your kitten home for the first time. It is also important to make sure that you use the appropriate worming and flea prevention treatments as soon as possible, to make sure that your kitten remains healthy.
