Dog Stress Relief During Firework Season: 6 Tried and Tested tips
Bonfire night is just around the corner, but what is a harmless evening of fun for us can be a terrifying ordeal for many of our beloved pooches.
If your dog is adversely affected, it’s important to have some stress relief strategies on hand to keep them as relaxed as possible.
Here are 6 tips for dog stress relief this bonfire night:
1. Create a space in the home where your dog feels safe and protected
Some dogs really benefit from having a safe space in which to hide from fireworks. This could be a crate, table or chairs draped with a blanket, for example. Make sure your dog can easily enter and leave the space to avoid them feeling trapped, as this could lead to further stress. You may also wish to provide them with their favourite toys and encourage play as a distraction technique to calm your dog during fireworks.
2. Leave the TV or radio on to mask the noise
You might be surprised to hear that dogs actually love classical music! Playing music with a h4 bass is especially effective for dog stress relief during fireworks, as it masks bangs really well – just be sure to keep it at a volume your dog is comfortable with to avoid causing further stress.
3. Keep your dog inside at ‘high risk’ times
Naturally, firework bangs are much louder outdoors, so if your schedule allows for it, take your dog for a walk before dark. Equally, ensuring your dog is inside during firework displays will drastically reduce the risk of them becoming spooked and running away (every dog owner’s worst nightmare). If fireworks unsettle your dog so much that they struggle to eat, it may also be a good idea to feed them a little earlier than normal, too.
4. Use distraction techniques
Long-lasting chews can be a great distraction to relieve stress in dogs during firework displays. Things like a Pedigree Jumbone, treat dispenser toy or Kong could be the perfect way to keep your dog distracted and focused on something they enjoy.
5. Try a remedy for stress relief in dogs
Kalm Aid Liquid

6. If nothing else works, consult your vet
A fear of fireworks doesn’t have to be a yearly struggle for you and your dog. If nothing is helping relieve your dog’s stress, speak to your vet – they may be able to refer your dog to a clinical animal behaviourist for expert support.
